The office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) in New York serves as a liaison between the United Nations, FES field offices and partners in developing countries to strengthen the voice of the Global South. It contributes to the international debate on globalization with seminars, conferences, roundtables and publications pertaining to development, economic, social, and security policy issues. Located within walking distance from the UN headquarters, FES New York is ideally situated in the midst of all the relevant actors from missions, the UN secretariat, and academic research institutions. Students specializing in international affairs, development and economic policy who want to take advantage of this challenging exposure are invited to apply for an internship at the FES New York office.
Internships with FES New York are three to four months long and are unpaid. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. German candidates are requested to apply for a J-1 visa through GIZ, which also provides for some financial assistance. Also the DAAD offers short- term scholarships as well as PROMOS. Applicants are requested to make their own arrangements for health insurance and housing, but the office can assist in finding an accommodation.
At the beginning of the internship, interns and the FES office will agree on a work plan, which will entail three different sets of activities:
Organizing conferences, meetings, or another special activities of the FES New York office. Maintaining the electronic outreach of FESNY via its website, e-mail news briefs, and social media. Assisting the office staff in performing the day-to-day business (phone calls, handling mail, and errands). Moreover, interns will conduct background research and surveys on topics that are relevant for the work of FESNY. Prospective interns should have a demonstrated interest in social issues and have obtained a first university degree (such as Bachelor). The ability to communicate in English is indispensable. Interested applicants should therefore submit in English:
